This time whithout Peter Sotos and with a more showtime approach (especially from PBest with a new flamboyant red outfit and inverted punk hairstyle). Sound was good but always lower that it would due to French laws; audience (except for a few connoisseurs) full of hype young lads came for the Octopus Festival who fled the place quite soon. WB & PB gave their best of boring intense non/anti entertainment sound with strong vocal performance, grabbing from each other the most powerful mics... trying to enlighten the mass with pop cliché (say "R&Roll&, say "yes") to crush it a little more with ferocious harsh. Note a little chic cunt going on stage to ask WB to turn down the sound only to be facelicked and placed in front of the amp and then thrown away.... excellent final with more & encore nude torsos to put bad taste and desecration at a higher level."

When Whitehouse comes to town, it's time to celebrate, particularly after almost twenty-five years and around twenty records. I don't think I was the only person who never thought there would ever be a live action down under, but it was worth the wait, however long you've been waiting.

The Corner hotel is one of Melbourne's biggest clubs/dives, fitting a few hundred comfortably, and there were probably a couple of hundred people there last night. It was not a Whitehouse show as such, but a part of a festival called 'What is Music', so it was a mixed crowd - punks, black metal heads, noise geeks, life in all its rich variety. The other acts were a mix of the bizarre and the surreal (everything from a family act where the young teenage son read from and then shredded pages of the bible, through to a guy eating glass), and for me added up to an uneasy feeling as Whitehouse were about to come on at 11:20pm.

The curtain opened, and the beautiful noise began. William on our left, Phillip on our right, and two tables on top of which sat their equipment. They are fully electronic now, but they don't fall into the trap of so many electronic groups of being 'stuck' to their spots. There was lots of movement, particularly from William, and lots of goofing around. The first few tracks were incredible - 'Wriggle Like a Fucking Eel' beginning without the full force of the music, and then pushing through the inner atmosphere; 'Cruise' pounding the lyrics into the skulls of everyone there; a beautiful improvisation based around the opening part of 'Philosophy'. The mood was set, but it wasn't a dark mood at all as I'd thought it might be. It was, as on the last few records, all about power exercised calmly and with joy.

During the wilder parts of the show, one of our resident lunatics started a mosh pit, the brutality of which at a punk or heavy metal show would have had people freaking out. The incredible 'munkisi munkondi' was messed around with, sounding far more interesting than on the CD, and faded into a long, dramatic version of THE song - 'Cut Hands Has The Solution'. The audience didn't seem to know what to make of this - the incessent pounding of the drum, and the shouted
lyrics that seem half joking and half deadly serious. Lots of people laughing at lines they seemed not to understand, while some picked up random references and seemed momentarily enlightened. In this, as in so many of the songs, Phillip and William switch around the singing to great effect. There was only one mock-aggressive moment later on, when Phillip was singing and William grabbed the microphone from him. Phillip looked like he was going to take him on, but it fizzled
out.

'Rock and Roll' was a strange moment, because so many people there seemed not to realise that it was being ironic. The scream of 'You Wankers!' wasn't as clear as it probably should have been to really let the people there know what was up. 'A Cunt Like You' was an absolute scream, although the vocals could have been clearer. I was really looking forward to screaming along my favourite lyric 'You must be fucking JOKING, Cunt!', but I must have missed my cue somewhere.

Highlights, for me, were that Whitehouse did not respond or acknowledge the audience (positive or negative) at any point; also, the Mr Universe poses/dancing during Movement 2000; and the fact that after a series of outrageous performances that night, it seemed that Whitehouse produced the most drama just through
their way of prowling the stage and using language as a weapon.
